3rd Quarter Volunteer Spotlight ... Helen Mastic

Helen and her husband, Tom, relocated to the Myrtle Beach area 25 years ago from Northern Virginia. Shortly after moving to Myrtle Beach, Helen found her way to Mercy Hospice. Helen has given twenty four years to volunteering with Mercy, for Helen came on board as a volunteer when Mercy first started serving the terminally ill in Horry County.
Helen remembers, shortly after she completed the volunteer training 24 years ago, Sister Connie asked if she would like to join six others and train to be a nurse’s aid at Conway Hospital. Being so helpful and accommodating, Helen decided to give it a try. She completed the training and for the next 5 years she volunteered as a nurse’s aid for Mercy Hospice. Helen has covered all volunteer areas over her 24 year period with Mercy. She spent many years taking inventory and ordering supplies for the clinical staff, she has served many patients as a nurse’s aid and as a volunteer, and she has spent countless hours working in the offices of the clinical staff and the bereavement staff. “Every time I considered retiring from my volunteer position, Sister Connie gave me another job”, quotes Helen. “I couldn’t let Sister Connie down”.
Thank you Helen for you many years with Mercy. The staff is forever grateful for your many contributions, your dedication and hard work. You are a true “Angel of Mercy”.
